Asbestos Testing and Clearance

Industry Leading Services

Prior to demolition, renovation, improvement, or repair of any suspect construction material within a structure, such as homes, multi-family units, commercial buildings, or public and private facilities, asbestos testing is imperative. Initial asbestos testing is required and enforced by multiple federal, state, and local laws, standards, and regulations.

Prior to the re-occupancy of any structure where asbestos abatement has been performed, clearance monitoring must be performed. Asbestos clearance monitoring is required and enforced by multiple federal, state, and local laws, standards, and regulations.

Asbestos abatement must be conducted utilizing certified abatement workers. Asbestos workers are required to be certified by multiple federal, state, and local laws, standards, and regulations. These laws are strictly enforced to protect worker safety.

About Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fiber being composed of many microscopic "fibrils" that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes. Asbestos fibers were readily available and inexpensive, making it a useful product for building materials due to its natural abilities to be an insulator, lubricant, and binder Asbestos fibers are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals, and they do not conduct electricity.

Types of asbestos minerals

  • Serpentine asbestos | Includes the mineral chrysotile, which has long, curly fibers that can be woven. Chrysotile asbestos is the form that has been used most widely in commercial applications.
  • Amphibole asbestos | Includes minerals like actinolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, crocidolite, and amosite. Amphibole asbestos has straight, needle-like fibers that are more brittle than those of serpentine asbestos and are more limited in their ability to be fabricated

Asbestos Health Effects

Asbestos is a known carcinogen and has many health effects and related diseases including:

Asbestosis  |  Scarring in the lungs caused by breathing asbestos fibers. Oxygen and carbon dioxide do not pass in and out of scarred lungs easily, so breathing becomes harder. Asbestosis usually occurs in people who have had exceedingly high exposures over a long time, but years may pass before any symptoms appear.

Pleural Disease  |  A non-cancerous lung condition that causes changes in the membrane surrounding the lungs and chest cavity (pleura). The membrane may become thicker throughout (diffuse pleural thickening) or in isolated areas (pleural plaques), or fluid may build up around the lungs (known as a pleural effusion). Not everyone with pleural changes will have problems breathing, but some may have less efficient lung function.

Lung Cancer  |  A malignant tumor that invades and blocks the lung’s air passages. Smoking tobacco combined with asbestos exposure increases the chance of developing lung cancer.

Mesothelioma  |  A rare cancer of the membrane that covers the lungs and chest cavity (pleura), the membrane lining the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), or membranes surrounding other internal organs. Signs of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos.

Other  |  In addition to lung cancer and mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can also cause cancer of the larynx and ovary. Current evidence also suggests asbestos exposure may cause cancer of the pharynx, stomach, and colorectum.
